Top 6 Examples of Google Bombing

Administrator January 19, 2022

Have you ever noticed that whenever you search something on Google, some pages come on the first page which has the same words you searched for? How does this happen?

The answer lies in this article. Google crawlers find the words that you search in billions of articles uploaded on the internet. Then, they list the optimized and the most suitable articles on the first page. This is a practice called Search Engine Optimization (SEO). The SEO practices which targets a webpage to rank on the top of the search page on Google is called Google Bombing. The only secret to your articles on the top of Google is writing SEO friendly articles. Google Bomb is a practice that helps you in achieving this. Google crawlers show those pages which have particular search phrases that you are looking for.

Back in 2005, The White House website published a biography of US President George W Bush which popped up first when people searched “miserable failure”. This google bomb is the most famous of all times and it continued until 3 years. Although accepting that this practice is unfair, Google claimed to end Google Bombing in 2007, but it still continues to happen.

  1. More Evil Than Satan Himself- This was the first-ever Google Bomb in history which happened early in 1999. Not only the first but the worst too. The search results showed contents on the tech giant Microsoft if someone typed “More Evil Than Satan Himself”. Isn’t that interesting, funny, and scary at the same time?
  2. Murder- In 2011, this Google Bomb was designed to make a political statement about abortion being equal to murder. The protest was against foeticide and abortion pills. Therefore, whenever anyone typed the word murder in the google search bar, an article on abortion came as the second recommendation by Google (first being the Wikipedia article on murder).
  3. French Military Victories- The France Military Conquest has been a failure and for most, this has become content for memes and other jokes. As bad as this sounds, Google Bomb worsened it. Back in 2003, if you searched for “French Military Victories”, Google would have shown a page which said, “there are no search results for French Military Victories, do you want results for French Military Defeats instead?”
  4. Liar- The year 2005 placed a tag called “Liar” to Tony Blair in a Google Bombing campaign with the website Google.co.Uk. Tony Blair was accused to be in military involvement with Iraq and also in search of weapons of mass destruction. The search results of the word “Liar” showed Tony Blair’s biography. Another Google Bomb related to Tony Blair was the word “poodle” which signified that he is George Bush’s lapdog.
  5. Silvio Berlusconi- In April 2006 if you were to type ‘buffone’ (clown, in Italian) into Google, the top result would have been Silvio Berlusconi’s website. The purpose was simply to make fun of Silvio Berlusconi by comparing him to a clown.
  6. Justin Bieber-While often used for political or subversive motives, there are also bombs that are purely around in the name of mischief. The notorious picture board 4Chan targeted tweenie-pop star Justin Bieber with a Google bomb in June 2010:

“Go to Google and search ‘Justin Bieber Syphilis’. Let’s get this to be No. 1 searched phrase on Google Trends. Use an autoclicker or macro if possible and get others involved. Unlike a death rumor, this will be hard for him to disprove.”

Google Bomb can be really unfair to some people and Google’s opinion can be the worst sometimes. In a recent instance, if you searched for “Completely Wrong” on the google image search bar, it showed pictures of the presidential candidate Mitt Romney. Google was trying to convey that Mitt Romney was completely wrong most of the time. Well, that is a debatable topic and Google stated its opinion. What do you think?
